Overview

A practical, hands-on workshop in traditional lime mortar and conservation masonry, delivered on-site at St Saviour's, a Grade II listed church currently on the Buildings at Risk Register. Working under the guidance of four experienced conservators, the workshop covers the formulation and application of lime mortar appropriate to a specific historic fabric, raking out and repointing masonry at varying stages of deterioration, and the decision-making process behind conservation-grade repair.

Learning outcomes:

• Mixing and working with lime mortar, including how to formulate mixes appropriate to a given site and substrate

• Raking out and repointing techniques across different architectural elements and degrees of decay

• How conservation repair decisions are reached, and what constitutes considerate, minimum-intervention practice on historic fabric

• The judgement required to balance a building's structural health with its historic character and appearance
